Georgia continues to rank 48th in the nation for adequate healthcare coverage AND for HIV risks to its citizens. .
And of course, to the pain of rural Georgians specifically, Georgia has the third highest rate of rural hospital closures in the nation.
In addition to an abysmal COVID response, Georgia has the single worst rate of maternal mortality of any state in the nation.
With all of Georgia’s health challenges, especially during a pandemic, additional - not “flat like a crepe” - funding for public health is needed to speed up vaccine distribution and make Georgians healthier. #gapol
Why is more funding needed? For starters, Georgia’s vaccine rollout has been a “snafu” and a “debacle,” leading health care workers and frontline heroes to “scramble” for the vaccine:
And as the Georgia Recorder rightly pointed out, the problems with the vaccine rollout can be DIRECTLY traced to years of flat budgets for public health..
In fact, Georgia has actually been ranked the WORST state in the country for vaccine distribution.
Today was the LAST day of the General Assembly’s Joint Appropriations hearings. The state’s Budget Director, Kelly Farr, bragged that the budget is “flat like a crepe,” ignoring that additional funding is needed for public health during a pandemic.

Now more than ever, it is clear we must hold our legislators accountable. Together with voters, allies, and volunteers, we must demand they pursue policies that will help our communities, not just their careers. #gapol
Chair of the Special “Election Integrity” Committee: Rep. Barry Fleming, who helped intimidate Black voters in Sparta and sent police officers to challenge their right to vote. Read about his appalling history of voter intimidation. #gapol
Chair of the Civil Justice Committee: Rep Trey Kelley, arrested last month in connection with a deadly hit-and-run. Despite direct knowledge of the accident, Kelly didn't call 911, leaving the victim on the side of the road for hours into the night. #gapol
On the Redistricting Committee: 5 GOP members who narrowly won reelection in competitive districts who now want to pick their voters to make their districts less competitive. Georgians should be on guard to prevent unfair maps made to benefit politicians, not voters. #gapol
Yesterday, while Georgians celebrated the inauguration of President Biden, VP Harris, and Senators Ossoff and Warnock, the GOP-led state legislature quietly announced its committee assignments for 2021 - and those assignments are unacceptable. Let’s break it down: THREAD #gapol

The power of Georgians, people of color and Southern voters was demonstrated in November and again in January. Their collective votes and collective voices made victory possible.
We must continue to exercise that power to protect the right to vote & fight for the change we need.
Congratulations to Georgia’s U.S. Senators, @ossoff and @ReverendWarnock, who were sworn in moments ago. I am proud to call you my Senators and my friends. #gapol #InaugurationDay
And we are proud to have funded GA-based orgs that mobilized a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-generational electorate. Georgians have made clear that we are a blue state and that voters - particularly Black voters and voters of color writ large - will not be silenced.
